Scentsy Husband – Support

“I managed to do all this (sell Scentsy, build and run a growing team) while being a full time mum and my partner doesn’t support me and actually switches off my warmers and diffusers.”

When I heard that from one of the speakers and top Directors at the recent Scentsy Family Reunion (SFR) 2019 at Gold Coast I was stoked that Krystal had done so well and yet surprised and somewhat confused that she didn’t get the support I thought all partners / husbands would provide.

Contrasting this was Megan’s presentation where she described how her husband told her to go for it in being a consultant and to go to the incentives while he kept the home front sorted.

The most powerful example of good support was during Cindy and Andrew Young’s presentation during the question and answer session (I’m paraphrasing here):

Question for Cindy: “How did you get Andrew’s support?”

Andrew: “I’ll answer this one”

“Most people don’t know this but It was actually me that signed her (Cindy) up to Scentsy. She wanted to be a stay at home mum, earn some more money for our family and do something she enjoys. Why wouldn’t I support her doing something she loves, that means our family is happy and it brings in money for us too?”

I could not have put it better myself and turned to The Boss and said “Ditto, what he said.”

Support doesn’t mean plundering the household budget for food rent / mortgage for buying Scentsy for getting setup or trips away. Support takes many forms:

  • Look after the kids when she (it could be he, I’m using she as an example)
  • Help unpack orders
  • Do deliveries, with her
  • Encouraging talks
  • Introduce people you know to Scentsy
  • Take a “Basket Party” to work
  • Help at markets and events
  • Do the housework (you should probably be doing some of this anyway)
  • Plus anything else that gives her time to focus on doing the best she can with Scentsy (my speciality is IT).

Clearly there are a lot of Scentsy consultants that do extremely well without the support of a partner or they may not have a partner. For those with partners that don’t support them I can’t help but wonder how much more successful they would be.

On top of all the good that comes from helping her, there is also the spinoffs that can come the way of the supporter:

  • Great smelling house / car / workplace / pet
  • Cleaning products for that support with housework
  • Incentive trips earned (Melbourne, Anaheim, Queenstown, Gold Coast so far).

If you have a partner / spouse that is a Scentsy Consultant (actually has any worth while dream they are following) then get in behind them. Make it easier for them to get the best of Scentsy that they can. Why wouldn’t you want her to have every chance of success?

Scentsy Husband – The “R” Word

“No, just posting on Facebook and waiting for the sales to come in won’t be enough.”

“If it isn’t working, you need to change what you are doing”.

What I’ve noticed from observing The Boss is that the best way to get up and going as well as keep customers happy is to meet them and look after them. It really is good old fashioned customer service.

  • Finding out what someone likes and why they want Scentsy
  • Helping to narrow down the choices
  • Bundling the products to get the best value
  • Presentation of Scentsy
  • Solving any issues straight away
  • Listening
  • Keeping folks informed of changes in the world of Scentsy, what is coming and what is leaving.

For sure, Scentsy products are so good that customers don’t need much of the above list however, doing those little things is what separates the good from the great.

Scentsy has an excellent online store that people can order directly from and quite a few do but it is the personal touch that people seem to remember. I suppose it is all about that “R” word, relationships. Yes, you read that from me in a blog post… Maybe this relationship thing is why so many Scentsy consultants are not blokes? However, I digress (again).

It may seem obvious however it needs to be stated: It is not possible to build a worthwhile relationship solely online, though I did hear something about “swiping right…” whatever that means.

Fortunately, Scentsy and The Boss, have a simple plan to starting well and continuing on:

  • Start with a “Launch Party” at home, and get help from up-line, those that have done this before. (Drinks and nibbles too)
  • Book parties with friends and family and guests from the launch party
  • Look after the host so their guests have fun and the host gets rewards.
  • Rinse and repeat (with Scentsy cleaning products of course).

If having a Scentsy Party, particularly a launch, at home isn’t possible or appealing then another venue or someone else’s house. Consultants, particularly in say London, sometimes need a central location such as a pub to host a party. I think I’d have to tag along on one of those if we did that here, for logistical support reasons of course.

Whatever or wherever the venue is, the most important thing to remember is build that personal relationship and then use tools such as Facebook, Marco Polo and Instagram to keep in touch and have fun doing so.

It’s Party Time…

“I need to launch the new season.”

“That’s nice, do you want a cup of tea?”

“I’ve booked the Town Hall”.

Regular Scentsy customers will know that Scentsy have two main seasons, Autumn / Winter and Spring / Summer.

These seasons is when new products are launched and old ones retired.

They are also a good time for Independent Scentsy Consultants to let their customers know what is happening.

What The Boss decided to do last year and again this year is to go a bit further and use the new season (Spring / Summer) to thank customers and friends for support.

All I knew was that serious lugging of gear and setup / tear down time was needed.

Here are the basic steps for setting up and hosting the event:

Purpose – The Boss and I decided that this annual event is a way to inform existing and potential and existing customers about the new season and to thank them for their support. Most importantly is not a sales event.  We do not want people to be pressured or obligated to buy anything. If people are to be hammered by high pressure sales then they will be put off coming and also tell others that they didn’t have a good time, and those people will also tell others the same.

Pick a date and time – making sure this event doesn’t clash with other local events (especially Highlands Motorsport race weekends) and that the preferred venue (Port Chalmers Town Hall) is available. Timing for us was set for 7:00 o’clock in the evening as it gave people a chance to get there after their dinner.

Check the venue – The Boss knows the venue well however if it was to be somewhere else, a site trip would be essential. Things to look for is parking, size, shape, lighting, ambience, catering facilities, sound system.

Content – Having said this isn’t a sales event, The Boss had some personal specials available as an incentive for attendance and also to further thank customers. We want this to be an event folks look forward to. A couple of games are used to break the ice and The Boss also has a short speech which I call the Indulgescents State of the Nation address, to explain what is new.

What to Display – Pretty much everything (an SUV and a car load) The Boss has collected including catalogues and props are laid out on tables around the hall in categories such as laundry, buddies, Disney (separate of course for compliance),  Christmas, warmers and diffusers. I’m next to useless when it comes to arty things so The Boss does the creative with the kids helping and me lugging the gear in.

What to Eat and Drink – Forget about the healthy food. This is a party so it’s savouries and sweets time.  Having some food left over which is OK as it is better than running out. My job on the night is drinks and it seems that Scentsy customers are not boozy with juice and Sprite being well ahead of the wine consumption. Maybe I should have had a few beers on offer? A tip for those that want to host events like this is to start buying drinks and frozen desert snacks and chips over a number of weeks to spread the costs out.

The Event – The Boss does a short welcome speech and tour of what is on display. A couple of games are played, everyone has a good time and goes home happy.

Cleanup – Family and friends of The Boss are super. We could not hold these events without their support and help.

So there you have it. A Scentsy Expo if you will to launch a new season or just to say “thank you” to all the customers and Scentsy friends that have helped over the past year.

All the hard work is worth it for the nice comments we got as people left and they are already keen for the next one.

Scentsy Husband – What is the Worse that Could Happen?

“How much!?”

“It’s great value, I’ll get a lot of product”.

“Right…, Anything else?”

“I’ll get the bigger kit after I host our party.”

“Our what!?”

That is pretty much how The Boss made that final move to join Scentsy, and we had quite a few ladies over for some food and drinks and a lot of laughs as they bought themselves some awesome gear and I got to do the dishes.

The Boss gets more than a few requests for information about joining Scentsy and it is great that Team Indulgescents is steadily growing. What I find interesting is the decision making process that people go through to either join the team or give it a miss.

There is the categories of people who enquire about joining that I’ve termed as “Hell Yeah!”, “Alright”, “Thinking”, “Not Now”.

The “Hell Yeah!” get after it and their party is a qualifying from the outset and they sign up there and then, collecting a lot of Host Rewards, booking their first party and getting after it straight away.

The “Alright”, are similar to “Hell Yeah!” but are a bit more reserved and sometimes take an extra party to sign on.

“Thinking” folks have been looking at Scentsy for a while, buying quite a bit of product over a long time and considering joining for almost as long. They like the other categories love the product but are not confident in selling (I prefer the phrase, “finding buyers” as Scentsy sells itself) as they think they don’t know many people. In short there is a real or perceived barrier.

“Not Now” people take a look, analyse the information and pull back. I’ve been in a role where “Not Now” is deemed to mean “No!” however, what The Boss and I have noticed is that after a few months a “Not Now” often jumps to “Alright” and turns out to have a lot more fun than they thought. The same sometimes happens to “Thinking”.

Whatever the category, the underlying reason is the same: The products are great and people genuinely love them.

Often we talk about all the travel opportunities and the extra (potentially unlimited) income that Scentsy can bring, and that is a good thing. It is great that targets are hit and those incentives often overseas, are great to attend, even if there is a certain amount of shopping to carry.

Say you are looking at joining Scentsy. Just as important for whatever category you are in, is to consider what the downside of signing up. What is there to be afraid of? What is the worse that can happen? Well, at worse, you get a kit with cheaper than standard price product and three months to sell $370 NZD worth of Scentsy in order to keep “active”. Your home, car, and workplace will smell great.

That is about as bad as it gets.  Which isn’t too bad really.

Scentsy Husband – The Challenges of Facebook (Posts not Being Seen).

One thing I noticed and bought to the boss’s attention on our way home from Scentsy Family Reunion 2018, is that Scentsy Consultants everywhere rely heavily on Facebook to get their messages out to their customers, potential customers as well as their team or down-line.

Quick and easy, Facebook Groups are setup to share information on what is new as well as any personal specials that are on offer. Group posts including Facebook Live give the opportunity to showcase new products quickly and get instant feedback. Online parties can be hosted and the host gets Scentsy Host Rewards.

Facebook Groups work so well that there isn’t any real reason to use anything else.

There is however, a risk to relying on the one platform; Facebook may make a change that stops the members of the group from seeing the posts with all the information.

Occasionally sites like Facebook may change their core algorithm which affects how items are found and seen. Late last week it wasn’t an algorithm change that affected Facebook group but a change to that defaults all groups that Facebook users have joined to show “Highlights” rather than All Posts. This means that users don’t get to see everything posted to a group that they belong to.

From the customer point of view this probably seems like a good idea, only the top posts from a group are shown on your Timeline. From a poster’s point of view this is a disaster. Posts that usually attract 90 – 150 views end up dropping to 0 – 6! Being unable to reach customers in the way they expect or like is not good.

Ideally, we need to tell the customers to revert the setting to show “All Posts” however it is difficult to let them know there is a problem as they can’t see the posts in the group that has the instructions.

We need a post to tell group members of the problem but because the post is not being seen, they don’t even know there is a problem. Using Facebook Messenger to send out an alert to all contacts has proven to be time consuming and also had the side effect of being locked out of Messenger due to “unusual activity”.

What to do about this problem? First, we found where the settings are to change so we can tell people about it and also to set our own Facebook so we don’t miss out on information in Groups we have subscribed to. Next, we will need to use different channels to get our messages out such as a good old mailing list to push out newsletters (working on this now), Instagram, Twitter, as well as LinkedIn and getting Google sorted out.

Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with customers and team however it should not be the only platform as the risks are just too high that there is a change to the way it works and communication is lost.
